That is a very interesting question. I don't know the right answer, but make sure to ask your Drs. That would be your baby's Dr, and even your ENT Dr or whoever would give you the Botox. Please let us know whatever you learn, or are told. I would think that since you aren't eating the botox, since that's where the milk is made from, whatever is ingested, that it might be okay. My daughter was about 2 when I found out that I had SD. So, I was beyond that point.

A few years ago I checked into this topic with some of my doctors and I think even at one of the symposia. The answer I got was that there really hasn't been any studies done on the subject yet. Most of them urged caution, saying that you know for certain that you won't do the baby any damage by not using Botox during pregnancy/breast feeding, while you don't know for certain what will happen if you do use it. Not much of an answer, but that seems to be all they can go on.

Thanks for your responses. I got the same “not much of an answer”. I have talked to my otolarynologist, a lactation consultant, my baby's dr and called a helpline here in Canada that is specifically equipped to deal with drugs and their safety while pregnant or breastfeeding. Basically, none can say that there is no risk. But assurances that it is “likely” safe vary from saying your body filters, your breasts filter, the baby filters. The botox is not systemic, so if injected properly will not enter the bloodstream, so no risk of it getting to the baby. If I wanted to be extra cautious, I could “pump and dump” for some feedings post injection. Apparently, then, any Botox that may have missed the spot would have cleared my system within 24-48 hours. There are no studies of Botox in pregnancy/breastfeeding moms (who would fund or participate that?). There is one case where a breastfeeding mom got botulism, was very ill, had her milk and her baby were tested and both were 100% clear of any toxin even though she continue to be sick. I attended last year’s symposium, and posed the question about Botox and pregnancy to the panel. Same response, but it was more like, “get past the first trimester, and don’t ask, don’t tell”. That is, injecting a pregnant woman is “likely” safe, but no dr is going to take the risk knowingly. I didn’t have any injections while pregnant.

Now that I am breastfeeding, my otolarynologist is willing. All those I consulted say it is “likely” safe, and I could take extra precautions by bottle feeding formula or stored breastmilk for 24 hours after. All were empathetic to my concern, but we’re reassuring that I would not “likely” harm my baby. At the same time, no one could tell me it is 100% safe either

Just thought I would pass along what I had found out while I make my decision…
