I have taken Delsym twice after reading the posts over the last few days. For me, unfortunately, there has been no change in my voice. Today it seems to have made me a little lightheaded. Maybe I'll give it another day or two, but it really seems too simple (and I do have reservations about long-term use). I'm not suggesting it doesn't work for some lucky ones, but apparently not for me.

I wish it did work for you. I think if it doesn't work right away it is not going to do the trick. It is not a 100% fix but it takes just enough of the catch away that I can flow freely in conversation.

I have been getting the botex injections. It has been over 5
months since my last injection. My voice was starting to get
to get bad. So I have been trying the cough syrup for over a
week. I fine that it is working great. I have to answer the
phone alot at work. I am not having any problems with the
phone and people understand me. But I am a tax preparer at
night. It seems to start wearing off by the time I get to my
second job. But I am still able to talk fairly good and my
shortness in breath is gone. I am going to keep using it for
awhile. I had called my doctor for an injection and did not
hear back from him so I think I will try this for awhile..

It's so great to hear that this is helping some other people. No one thing is going to work for everyone, but hopefully everyone will find something that will help them. I only take the one dose a day because it's not that important for me to sound good in the evenings, but according to the bottle you can take 2 doses a day.
I just picked up some Sucrets DM Cough Formula cough lozenges that contain contain 10 mg of dextromethorphan hydrobromide each to try if I have a meeting in the evening or something where I want to sound better. I thought I'd try using them when my 12 hours with the Delsym are up and see it just a small amount of DM would be enough to get me through the evening........just a thought. Good luck! I hope this keeps working for us! Nancy

I really wish it was working for me. My voice is currently very, very bad. It is making work nearly impossible. I haven't answered a business call in weeks. Thankfully, I can delegate some of that. I've had this problem for over two years, but it has only gotten really bad in the last couple of months. I've never had botox and have been trying other approaches like voice rehab. It sure is tough to be patient though. I long for the day when I can speak again without so much effort and strain.

I have posted this in the past. I have taken Benedryl for my allergies and noticed marked improvement in my voice. I recently was given Antivert which is Dramamine for dizziness. I noticed my voice improved 95%. I thought it was odd. My neurologist asked me if I thought the Antivert helped my voice and I was shocked! and said yes. He said its a antihistimine like Benedryl and that it could indeed help the spasms. I asked my ENT the same question. He confirmed that anything sedating help some by sedating the brain stem where the abnormal signals begin. I am now on Antivert three times a day. My voice is 95% good. And I have had my voice sound almost like I was in male puberty, you know the funny way it goes high and than low, whille it was coming back. Now it is rich, not breathy, and I have volume. I have no spasms. I have abductor SD. I wanted to share this information with all of you. I think the cough medicine is sedating also. That would answer why both the cough medicine and the Antihistimines work.

I was all excited because when I first started taking Delsym my voice became easy and fluid, but it only lasted about 4 days. I have kept taking it and about every third day it is better. Don't know what to think. I'm going to stay on it for about a month before I decide.

If Delsym and Benedryl both work, then seems to me that they
can come with a drug that will help us. The doctor are getting
rich off of Botex shots and surgery. I know my doctor charges
about 2000 to 3000 for each shot, it take him 15 minutes.

I tried Benadryl today. It may have worked a little bit, but certainly made me quite tired. I was hesitant to take it during work, but you know how it goes, anything that will help with speaking is worth a shot. In my case, the cost outweighed the benefit. I suppose it might be worth trying one or two more times just to determine if there really was a small improvement (perhaps the slight change I noticed would have occurred anyway). But I have to tell you, I still feel groggy and I took it 5+ hours ago with no real improvement.

It has been my experience that you have to be consistant on the Benedryl. Every day.
I take my antihistimine in the morning and before bed.

The NIH is doing research on DXM which has, as I understand, yet to show promise for its use as an effective treatment for SD. Anecdotal reports on a BB are fine, but if you read closely you might realize people on these medications are also seeking out various other treatments - i.e., perhaps the drugs do not currently provide significant enough help. So I'd hesitate to say they "work" just yet. And this is where NIH comes in as they are equipped to conduct objective studies.

Other research going on at NIH will also hopefully lead to the development of additional potential treatments. If you are interested, perhaps you could consider participating in one of their trials. Their research is crucial! And it's not about Botox...

NSDA supports the work of the NIH so I would encourage you to attend the next symposium on May 5 '07 in White Plains, NY where you will hear updates on the latest research on SD.

I have been trying the cough syrup. I have not had a Botex
shot for over 5 months. So I figure if I last 7 months it works.
It took away my shortness in breath and I can talk alot easier too.
