Change in Voice When You Are Sick?

Do you find that your voice totally goes or you see a huge difference, when you have the common cold or flu? How much longer does it take to get your voice back? Any suggestions?
I have a 9 and 7 year old. They are bringing home the wonderful germs. I want to avoid them as much as I can, yet I need to live.

Has anyone used an inhaler before to open up the airways in a situation like this? Do you feel it helps?

I read the board and get so much information!
How do you feel Benadryl works?
Do you feel weather is also a factor in your SD?

Thank you in advance for all your wonderful information and suggestions!

Jen

Hi, Jen,

It's interesting as a lot of SD patients actually report their voices sounding better and/or it being easier to talk when they have a cold, flu, etc. It seems the swelling might help interfere w/ the spasms to some extent. So if anything it's a benefit of being sick!

Of course, SD patients are not immune to common laryngitis so perhaps that is what you are dealing with. In that case, it will run its course much like it does in the "normal" population. My only suggestion for that would be steam and rest.

I would only use an inhaler if you have some sort of asthmatic type problem w/ your lungs. This would be unrelated to SD. Opening your airways won't generally improve your voice.

Never noticed any weather factor in SD.

Good luck and feel better,
Laurie

I've had both effects on the voice. It all depends on the type of cold. If I am really congested my voice sounds normal.

If it's a cold that affects my throat, I sound worse.

I noticed too if I cry my voice sounds normal, well, actually a voice with a stuffy nose but much better than the SD voice.

I truly believe my sinuses was affected and I lost voice resonance in some way.

Call me crazy, but I really feel the culprit to SD is the sinus cavity and not the vocal chords.

Anyone else agree???

Jacky
