For me personally, Topamax was not an effective treatment for my SD (AD/AB/tremors). It was one of the drugs my neurologist prescribed over a course of months. Unfortunately none of them were effective for my situation and most left me extremely tired and/or in a haze. I have since moved to Botox with decent (not perfect - yet) results. I also take Inderal for the tremors in my throat. It is helpful for the tremors, but not the SD.Each case of SD is so different that what works for one will not phase another, so I continue to try anything and everything I hear about - and encourage others to do the same!

Hi! I'm not elderly. . . yet . . at 53. . . My neurologist prescribed Topamax 100mg for Migraine headache therapy as a phophylactic (sp?) & I have had great success. I take it at night time. He also prescribed Clonazepam .o5mg (generic for Klonopin) for the AD/SD. It seems to be up & down at this point. Chicago weather is cold so my voice is not good right now; was better when the weather was warmer. Living alone doesn't help, but hey, the cat & dog don't complain. I have decided against Botox for personal reasons at this time. I find when I talk that sometimes my voice becomes a bit stronger, but then becomes tired & fades out, much like me by the end of the night. My neurologist is located in Frankfort & Joliet, IL & is superb. I have been his patient for 11 years, Dr. V. Paul Bertrand. Great staff also. FYI. . . .

Topamax isn't a drug you want to start taking unless you are good at taking your medications regularly. A doctor wanted to prescribe it for my migraines, but I tend to forget to take my medication and I wasn't interested in the "may cause seizures" consequence of missing a dose.I have a friend who swears by it though. She doesn't have SD, but she had unusually bad migraines and had far too many of them. Topamax has made her life dramatically better.

I was on Topamax for several years to help with one of my movement disorders.
I went into the hospital for surgery, my schedule was all messed up I had to stop cold turkey which you should not do!!!!!!!
I tried going back on it! Not only did the medication help pain yet it did help the spasming along with the headaches!
This medication is usually used in conjuction with another antiseizure med, that makes it more affective. The last try was horrific. You are what my Dr calls "loopy" You are slow, your speech is not correct, you are tired and sometimes you are cranky. You do things and do not always remember what happened! Everyones body reacts differently to meds. Listen to your DR. and take it slow listen to your body and others around you! Good Luck! Jen

ok folks - I'm on day 3 of 25mg Topamax. The dosage increases weekly by 25mg eventually reaching 200mg (not the max). anyway, even at this low dose there is some difference in ability to speak more clearly. i believe it is because my mood is a bit more relaxed and calm thereby making it less difficult to speak. I'm looking forward to seeing what benefit increased doses may provide.

Hallelujah and PTL!!! For the first time in I don't know how long I answered my business phone this morning with NO SPASM! That is not to say that I still don't have spasm but it is not as constant or even as evident. I am on my third week of Topamax and just started on 75mg today. Please let me be clear on Topamax. I am not claiming it as a miracle drug; but for me, it is helping somewhat and I am happy with whatever helps, know what I mean???

I'm finding that Topamax is a big help to me. It is my belief that bad breathing habits occur either consciously or unconsciously to try to compensate for the vocal cord spasming. Now, while now being perfect, my voice has improved significantly and I feel it is a combination of voice therapy, which is helping me learn to breathe correctly and Topamax, which greatly helps the anxiety that is secondary to having SD. Topamax isn't for everybody, some people just can't tolerate it but for me so far, it's been the best thing to come along so far. I'm on 75mg working up to 100mg with 200mg being the max dose. I hope not to have to go to 200mg but if necessary, so be it.

I am glad you are finding some relief from the topamax. I was prescribed topamax for migraines that mimic strokes. I lasted three days on it and then could not think straight. Have you had any of those side effects, if so did they go away after time? Also I had heard that they use topamax as a diet pill in Europe. Have you had any weight loss, and/or loss of appetite on it. Just curious!Jennette

first, sorry for the double post, i thought i was doing something wrong. in response to your question, yes, i had the side effects but they eventually go away. and yes again, topamax has an anorexic affect. my doc said 'don't forget to eat'. i start 100mg topamax next week and don't know that i'll be able to tolerate it for the long term, hope so. i'm anxious to see what benefit comes with 100mg. at any rate, my anxiety and depression have decreased significantly which helps quite a bit with the voice abilities.

Can we get an update on how you're doing with the Topamax? Also, do you have AB or AD? Thanks.Lori
