does the botox injections hurt?

Hi everyone I was told I have SD last month after I went to my neuro for a checkup for my migraines. He then sent me to the local ENT and he confirmed that I had SD but he was unable to do any injections so I am being sent to the UofM. So my question is what should I expect during the procedure, does it hurt, and how long does it take?

Hi

I had my first botox injection in October. I had 2.5 units each side. Fom my own experience it was uncomfortable but not painful and I had a local anaesthetic which was one injection and then had to wait around 10 minutes for it to work. Then I had the botox injections which took about two minutes. Then my consultant said "that's it". I was so surprised as I was very worked up and worried and it was over so quickly. I have had excellent results. A breathy voice for a few weeks but very smooth and understandable and now my voice is strong. Friends and family are stunned at how much better I sound so from personal experience I would most certainly go again as the benefits are well worth a bit of discomfort for a few minutes.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Regards
Iris

in my experience (which is over 40+ injections now, the whole process takes about 10-15 minutes. I've never had any pain and maybe some slight discomfort, but minor.

Good Luck.

I am confused. You went to a neuro because of migraines and you were told you have sd. How did your neuro and local ENT recognize that you have SD? What type of exam did they give?

While I think that, generally speaking, most people don't experience much pain from a botox shot for SD, it does depend to some degree on the skill, technique, and expertise of the administering physician. I had one shot done by a supposedly very reputable doctor that was one of the most painful and excruciatingly long and uncomfortable periods of my life. It went on for around 40 minutes and I left practically in tears. On the flip side, I had an injection a few months ago that went so quick and so painlessly that the doctor had to tell me that he did it and that it was over...otherwise I would have never known. And, some people in my local support group warned me that the method of injection that I was about to have done is, according to their experience, extremely painful. I hardly felt a thing! So I think it varies somewhat. Most on the BB describe more of an uncomfortable feeling moreso than pain. My throat hurts for awhile after the local wears off...this, for me, is much worse than the botox procedure!

After reading about your 1st injection ordeal of 40 min. of pure hell, I think I would have questioned the doctors experience of both the procedure, and his/her ability of doctoring! That is crazy it went on for so long! I would have had my doubts at 5 mins. Didn't he tell you it's a quick procedure? I'm glad you had the courage to even get another injection, and also glad it went smoothly.
For all of you who are getting there first injection, I'd like to say my first was a breeze. I was given a topical to numb the skin, and a slight pinch, and 1 min. later it was over. I had 2.5 bilaterally on Nov.23rd and I'm sounding great at about 90% really good voice.
I would rather get the Botox injection than a routine teeth cleaning at the dentist any day!
Good luck!

when i was at my neuro for a followup on my migraines we started talking about my speech. the doctor asked me how long i have had diff speaking and i said for as long as i can remember and that my grandmother speaks the same way. the best i can explain my speech is like when your sick and you have a scatchy throat , sometimes my voice cracks so bad people think im going to cry(which im not. the worst part about my speech is that i work as a paramedic in a er and alot of my patients are always wondering "whats wrong" or why do you speak like that. i used to work on an ambulance and i never could give my radio reports to the hospitals because my speech was so awful, and it gets worse the more nervous i am.
anyways back to the doctors. my neuro recommended me to the ent because he thought i had sd. the ent agreed and sent me to the UofM and my appt is jan 19th. so we will see. im just excited that i have been dianosed when i thought for the longest time that my speech was just always going to be crappy.

Just to let you know, I have had 3 Botox injections and can honestly say they're not at all bad!!! I was scared to death the first time, but - no problem. First the dr gives a shot to anesthetize the area, then a few minutes later gives the actual injections. I have one on each side. Pain? Gosh, for just a few seconds with the painkiller, and just a bit of what I like to call discomfort while he's injecting the actual Botox! Like you, I was SO excited when I had a real diagnosis after many drs saying it was chronic laryngitis etc. etc. - I actually shed a few tears! Then it took me about 10 years to get the guts to get the Botox - SO sorry I waited - all the years of talking "funny" wasted! Oh well.

Good luck - keep us posted on your successful experience!
Dolores

Hello all.

I'm a newbie here, but was diognosed w/ SD back in 2003. I have huge pitch swings, and what I call choking - it's like my chords lock down and won't let any air thru at the beginning of words or sentences. I'm a business professional who does sales and presentations to clients.

I've been decent at hiding my SD with caughing, pausing or acting like I'm thinking...while internally I reset my posture and force relax my throat so I can get words to come out.

I'm pretty stupid about the botox injection patch :-)! I thought they administered it down the wind pipe with the snake - but reading between the lines on these threads, it sounds like its administerd from outside the neck.?? Would that be a accurate guess?

I'm now considering going back to my specialist in Seattle and grilling them on the Radiesse and botox solutions for me.

Thank you for this message Board - and thank you for hearing me out...and addressing my question.

Kind regards

me.

Just wondering...you said you would be going to the U of M. There are several U of M's in the country. Are you by any chance going to the University of Minnesota? If you are, you will probably see Dr. Goding who is the one who does the botox injections there. He is very experienced with botox. I received several injections from him and never had any pain beyond a slight pinching feeling. My injections took about a minute total. No big deal. My anticipation and worry about the shot were far worse than the actual experience!

Good Luck!

Hi, I had my first injection Wed and I would do it again if I can speak better. It was not the most pleasent experience but it is quick. I'd agree its more discomfort than real pain. I didn't notice much change the first day after but today my voice is less broken, just breathy and tends to give out quickly to a whisper. I asked the question about coughing, that is difficult. Good luck on your first trip.

Katie

I have had about 12 botox injections so far. My doctor doesn't use an anesthesia. He manually probes my throat, places a very thin needle, that is connected to an EMG monitor, into my larnyx, I say "eeee" so the EMG can verify the placement of the needle and he injects the botox. Ditto on the opposite side and I am typically finished in about 45 seconds. The pain is less than getting most shots because the needle is so fine. Piercing the skin is probably the biggest pinch and that is so momentary it doesn't really count as pain. Much easier than having bloodwork done!
