Radiesse, New treatment for ABSD?

Our local news did a report on a woman who lost her voice after having a cyst removed from her thyroid. The used the wrinkle drug called Radiesse, injected into the vocal fold to force the vocal chords closer together. They said the treatment last longer than fat or other injections and could be permanent. The woman was interviewed three hours after the office injection and had a near normal voice. She was a teacher like many on this bulletin board and her job depended on getting her voice back.

I have ABSD that has failed all treatment options and have a "bowed" vocal cord. I am wondering if this might be a treatment option for me. Has anyone heard of anyone having this done? The doctor in the article was from Florida and I live in Illinois and am afraid to fly. I tried the email address of the specialist I saw in Springfield, Il but it came back to me. I am hoping someone in the area knows about this treatment option and performs it within driving distance of me, as I do not wish to fly.

Thanks for posting this. This is quite interesting. I have no problems at all with flying, as I fly 300 miles every time I get a botox shot. If this is a permanent, proven fix of some sort, I'd fly just about anywhere to have it done. It'll be interesting to hear more on this.

Best,
Keith

I googled this and can't see any reason this wouldn't work for ABSD. Maybe I just don't understand enough but wouldn't puffing up the vocal cords moving them together help those of us with AB/SD?

Hi Celeste:
Yeah..it should work for AB and, seemingly, would actually be more appropriate for AB than for AD, since with AD the vocal folds are already too close together. From the little I've read on the whole general subject of medialization, it does say there can be some other issues that can arise as a result of having these various materials implanted. And, most don't seem to be a long term solution. Apparently, this new drug, Radiesse, due to the chemical composition, has the potential to turn into bone once it's implanted...not a desirable situation either. I'd have to wait until more research is done and more long-term results are in for operations geared to helping those with AB.
My doctor keeps telling me..someday I'll just have to take a pill. Sounds good to me.

Best,
Keith

This is interesting. I have sent a message requesting information from Dr. C. Ludlow at the NIH. In addition, I have requested information about Radiesse as it relates to ABSD directly from the manufacturer. I have asked them for the names of physicians who have used their product in such an application. Once I have responses I will post them on the bulletin board.
