This is something that I have posted before, but it happened again, so I thought I would post again. I wonder why my voice sounds better when I have a cold? For several days last week, I had a cold (flu or something), and my voice got deeper and a little raspier. But, it had not spasms and I enjoyed talking. I'm sure there is some swelling or something going on that causes this to happen. Wish there was a medication that could re-create the situaiton (but not the cold).

I experienced the same thing. I don't get colds very often (1 every 2 years or so) and before I was diagnosed with SD, but suffering from its symptoms, I had a pretty intense throat cold. For a few days during my illness I had no spasms and could talk without any hesitation. Haven't had a cold in a few years since so I couldn't tell you if it is consistent with me. It really felt like when your botox is at its peak (least breathy voice, strongest full voice). I told this to my doctor and he didn't seem to have an explanation.

Yes, I have noticed this also. I get about one cold per year that lasts for about 8-10 days and the same happened to me with a deeper raspier voice with no hesitation. I haven't had a cold for about a year so I sort of forgot about that. I'm 7 days into my first Botox injection so It will be interesting what will happen to my voice if I get a cold while the Botox is working. Another time that my voice is clear with no hesitation is after a night of drinking too much alcohol, during the "morning hangover stage". But I don't make a habit of it!

Raymond,

I have also noticed the "morning after" condition as well. Same deeper, raspier voice with almost no hesitation. It almost seems like there is some connection with irritation and a better voice. It would be interesting to see if the body produces a chemical during these conditions.

Jack,
There could be. I've been trying to figure it out for a long time. All the good periods of time when I have a good speaking voice (at least I think it's good) is when my brain is "foggy"? like if my wife wakes me in the middle of the night (to tell me to stop snoring!) or during a morning hangover, and during a bad cold, like having "medicine head" all these times I can speak without much hesitation and strain.
Its such a strange condition. Too bad I couldn't walk around half asleep, drunk, and stuffed up! Just kidding! :)

Raymond,

Somedays I wish I was half asleep, half drunk, and suffering from a slight cold to trade with my bad voice days.

I currently have a cold and put off my botox shot because of voice improvement with the cold. I notice it about once a year. Amelia SD-AD, Minnesota
