Hi Myra! Congratulations on your new baby! I wanted to write because I had a baby in January and actually had the same thing happen to me. I had botox about 3 months before I got pregnant and did not get any more until Emily was about 2 months old. I normally receive botox every 3-4 months but while I was pregnant my voice held up great. I also thought maybe I had been cured. My voice started getting worse around the 7th month and slowly got worse and worse. I have had 3 botox shots since her birth and I don't feel it is working as well as it did before pregnancy. It is manageable, but just not as good. I put it off to going so long without botox that we are actually starting over. I do believe "pregnancy hormones" play a part with the SD. I even told my doctor that and he said, "well, you never know". As far as the "tightening", I also feel that lately. I don't know what it is, but know it has to do with my SD. Once again, congratulations! Amelia, Apple Valley, MN, USA

My voice improved in both my pregnancies. I had the same experience as both of you.

Hi Myra
First, congrats on your new baby girl! A whole bunch of exciting firsts await - it just keeps getting better and better. Also affected by AD/SD, I gave birth to my little boy in 2004, and similiar to you, went without shots from about 2 months prior to pregnancy to 10 weeks post birth. I too, felt that my voice was somehow benefitting from all the hormones - it certainly wasn't perfect, but I didn't feel as though I had returned to my baseline I'd been before getting botox. Neither my otolarynologist or my family doctor would comment for sure, but considered that the hormones (relaxin etc) may also play a part on the vocal cords. My otolarynologist, whom I respect and adore, suggested early on that the pregnany could make my voice better, worse, or stay the same - not much guidance, but telling me it was so hard to tell. By the time I was 10 weeks post birth (and breastfeeding) my voice was more than ready for a shot. My first shot after having the baby resulted in little breathiness (less than normal, and spasms came sooner, so I was worried about its longevity) but I still managed to go my usual 4 months until the next one. The 5 shots I've had after that behaved exactly as they used to, lasting 4 months each. Note, that my dr sees no real point in the non-pregnant patient going eons, allowing themselves to return to baseline, between shots as long as you aren't in his office every 2 months. So, you may be back on track after your next one. My otolarynologist explained that going so long without Botox had likely returned me to baseline, and my first shot post preg may have responded exactly as my first shot ever. I just couldn't remember. I am now pregnant with baby #2. That's the great news. Sadly, I am not seeing the same good voice. It's been 9 months since my last Botox, (3 more months til baby comes) and I really feel like I am baselining back to when I was diagnosed in 1998. I'm struggling with it currently, but know it is temporary. I take it day by day, and enjoy what I can do as much as I can. I was hopeful, but it shows you every pregnancy is different. It is nice to see other pregnant and new moms on the site talking about their experience. When I wrote in with questions in 2004, there was very little response. There are some of us, and I think we can help each other with the peculiarities of combining pregnancy and SD and what each of us goes through Good luck!!

Hi!I am now 17 weeks pregnant and have not really noticed a change in my voice. It seems to be about the same. I was hoping it might improve, because I have heard of that happening, but hasn't happened yet in my case. Dale

Dale, has your voice improved yet? I'm almost 8 wks pregnant and haven't noticed my voice improving either. For those of you who posted (or anyone else who has experienced this) that your voice improved while you were pregnant, how far along in your pregnancy did you notice the improvement? Thanks in advance for your feedback! JoyJoy

Hello everyone,Thanks a lot for your response! It's good to read and learn from other moms (to be). I hope my next botoxshot will have better results, but we'll see. I have to wait untill january. However, I am happy that I can speak normally to my baby. My doctor says that has to do with speaking in a higher pitched voice to baby's. (What mothers naturally do). Good luck to you all! Hi Myra
I know it's been awhile since your post, but I was wondering what kind of success you had with subsequent shots? I had my first shot post birth (after no shots for 12 months while I was pregnant etc). I am 3 days post shot and usually I am experiencing some breathiness by now. So far, I can't discern anything going on, and I'm concerned that this one didn't work. I guess I am hoping that if this one didn't "work", you can offer some reassurance that the next one did....Thanks
