Aspartame caused me excessive thick postnasal drip for months. I was drinking a lot of flavored water - sweetened with nutrasweet (aspartame). When I went off it suddenly, I had a withdrawal reaction like a bad bad cold for a week. Then the postnasal drip gradually stopped. Experts on aspartame say it takes two months without it to get a true test if it is affecting you. I have been off it for 4 months and have very little postnasal drip. I have also not been sick nearly as much as before from colds and flu. During damp weather I do have a little postnasal drip that I control with Fenu-Thyme from the health food store. It is a mixture of fenugreek and thyme.

When my voice first started to get bad I thought it was allergies because I had the bad postnasal drip all the time. I went to an allergist who found only mild allergies - to mold and dust mites. He gave me an elimination diet and said to test each food for a week. Aspartame was near the top of the list. After a week I could tell no difference, so forgot about it. Later I read on the internet that you have to be off aspartame for two full months to get a true test.

BTW, what the allergist prescribed was 150 mg per day of phenylpropanolamine (now withrawn from the market) and Nasonex, a steroid inhaler. I lost my voice completely the second day and my blood pressure shot up to dangerous levels. This was a very conscientious doctor but the medicine nearly did me in.

So if you use nutrasweet or aspartame, maybe my experience will help you. You may be using it and not know it - read the labels.
