Has anyone also developed a horrible cough with this problem? I was diagnosed with Irritable Larynx Syndrome or Vocal Cord Dysfunction and have been coughing for 2 years now. I am thinking it is almost the same thing. Any help? The only relief I am getting is from Xanax and cough syrup with codeine.

Hi,
My name is Kerrie and I live in Sydney Australia.
I have Dopa Responsive Dystonia & Vocal Cord Dysfunction.

Did the Respiratory Specialist diagnose your VCD? If so did the Dr ask you to try speech therapy? It is suppose to be the first course of treatment. Do you have any other symptoms other than your cough?

I am trying to find out the difference between dystonia in the larynx & dysfunction of the larynx.

In August '05 I was finally diagnosed with DRD after having Botox for a head tremor & going on Sinemet my voice returned and the rest of the spasms were mainly under control, but I was still having breathing troubles & a cough, especially during exercise and out in the cold night air.
For most of my life I was diagnosed as having Asthma, but just recently the Dr's have changed this to Vocal Cord Dysfunction.
I now have two different voice problems, both being muscle problems with the larynx.
I had a Respiratory test called a Eucapnic Hyperventilation Test & a Flow Volume Loops Test which caused me to have complete airway closure.
When I have an attack of VCD my symptoms include cough, pain radiating down my neck, left arm, chest & back with shortness of breath,as the larynx closes completely, I can't inhale & my voice goes.
The Dr's want me to try speech therapy, changing my breathing technique. But they are not very hopeful because of the Dystonia (DRD}.
I will be seeing the Neuro. that specializes in spasmodic dysphonia & botox in a 10 days. I am hoping that he can give me some answers.
Hope I have been some help, I have been wanting to talk to someone else with VCD or VCD/Dystonia as none of my Dr`s have any other patient with both.

Kerrie DRD/VCD

Hi, I have had a cough for 15 years which I developed before the onset of my SD. It started with acid reflux and I had been smoking at the time for over 30 years. When the SD came along I thought that I possible had throat cancer. However, I went to an ENT and was told that I did not have cancer and he suggested that I quit smoking. I haven't smoked for 9 years but have continued to have a chronic cough. I have been treated for acid reflux but the medication gives me a stomach ache but I do get relief from tums and elevation of my bed, but yet I continue to cough..I sometimes wonder if the botox injections have anything to do with my cough. I have been getting botox injections for the past 9 years. I do get some relief from my cough with cough syrups.

Hi Doris,

About 5 years ago I became very ill, the Dr's were treating me for severe Asthma, exhaustion & reflux but I wasn't getting any better. I was put into hospital for 2 weeks,I had every test known to man & when I was released I was told that my cough was not Asthma that my cough & hoarse voice were due to severe reflux & that all my muscle & neuro problems were probably due to a virus or possible (MS or Myasthenia gravis) How wrong were they!
If I only knew then what I know now.

Doris has your Dr mentioned the Fundoplication Operation as an option for you, here in Aust. they only do it as a last resort the medication wasn't working properly & all my Specialists felt that I had so many other health issues that they had to try. I haven't had anymore reflux.

In Feb.'05 with great success I had the Fundoplication Operation for severe Gastro Oesophageal Reflux & Hiatus Hernia. I was on a soft diet for 3 months losing over 30 pounds but the operation exacerbated all of my other problems. I suppose it was good in one way because the Dr's finally started to take notice of what I was saying.

Then in August '05 I was diagnosed with DRD.

April '06 I was given Amitriptyline 50mg per day for Left. side facial Neuralgia. WOW what a difference!!!

Now finally the larynx closure, cough & other symptoms are diagnosed VCD What a relief it is not all in my head !!!

Take care
Kerrie DRD/VCD

Hi! I have AD & chronic cough. Dr Bastian said I have a sensory nerve cough. This is in addition to asthma & seasonal allergies & post nasal drip. Add in Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Arthritis & a bit of depression. My allergist just changed my meds & took me off of sigulair & put me on Zyflo 4 times a day. It has made a big difference with less coughing & less mucus. My neurologist also has me on Klonepin at night for the SD. Not going the Botox route. Good luck & see if the Zyflo could help you.

I suggest you do a research on VCD or acid on the vocal cords. It's very much like gerd except instead of stomach it is vocal cord acid. There is quite a bit online about it. I believe I used "Acid on the vocal cords" The reason I searched this out is because, Dr. Berke who did my surgery successfully (I add) told me I had acid on the vocal cords. I asked if he meant like acid reflex and he said "No" When asked if he could get rid of it, he said it just comes back but the web papers suggest diet, no citrus, milk, and other food. Can't remember them all. It's much safer than the medications that are used for it.
