Hi all. Matt from Melbourne here. I was diagnosed with AD SD in 2001 and have had 5 years of botox shots, about once every 7 months on average, with mixed success. Over the past year or so, I've noticed the onset of some spasms in my neck, shoulder and arm (simultaneously), always on the left side. I mentioned it to my Neurologist a year ago, who suggested it was an extension of the SD problem, and said I shouldn't worry about it. However, the spasms are slowly getting bigger and more frequent. Any thoughts / similar experiences?

Matt, a very small percentage of people diagnosed with Spasmodic Dysphonia also develop another from of Dystonia.
Your mention of spasms in neck, shoulder and arm sound very much like Spasmodic Torticollis or Cervical Dystonia as it is also called. To learn more about these and other forms of Dystonia, other than Spasmodic Dysphonia, go the the DMRF web site at: http://dystonia-foundation.org/defined/

Hi Matt:

For many years I have endured SD. During the last ten years I too have neck and shoulder pulls. I have recently discovered research at Duke with Nicotine patches that got my attention. For a couple of months I have been using 21 mg 24 hours and am experiencing much muscle relief/relaxation. So for me they work. Suggest you visit two web sites. No releif for SD however. http://www.dukemednews.org/news/article.php?id=9863

Hi Matt. Fort Lauderdale here. Can I ask you what neurologist you're seeing? I cannot understand that a doctor would tell you 'not to worry about it!' That really makes me angry! I strongly suggest that you find another doctor!

You can write to me off the board at: Samietooo@aol.com

Hi Matt. I was also diagnosed with AD/SD in 2000 and have had botox shots every year on average. I have also had spasms but throughout my body but mainly on the right side. I talked with my neurologist and she diagnosed me with also having essential tremor (which according to her, can effect people with SD). My ET has gotten worse over the years but is aggrivated by stress or being tired. There is more info on ET at wemove.org Hope this info is helpful. Stacy
