After takinga few months off from pursuing medical attention with this SD, I might decide to jump back in a give Botox a try...provided I can afford it.

What is the going rate for a shot? It would be helpful to me if you let me know how much your insurance is paying...

Thanks!
Bill (formerly Provo, UT...now Baltimore, MD)

Bill,

If it's in-network, you only pay a co-pay ($5-$30)and/or co-insurance (10% of allowance, 20% of allowance, etc.). If it's out of network, insurance plans' reimbursement rates vary, but these days I bet most people can find an MD in network to cover the costs. If you don't have an MD in network who provides botox, insurance carriers should cover the cost out of network (i.e., provided it's not your choice to see an out-of-network specialist). A lot of insurance companies forget to tell you that.

When I was getting botox injections my insurance paid all of it. I don't get botox anymore because I had the SLAD-R surgery, which took good care of my voice, It paid 100% of that too. I had Medical and Blue Cross. I think injections run anywhere from $500 to $1500, depending on how much of an injection you get.

Hi, Cathy.

I wouldn't back off your insurance company. Most will cover Botox after a good fight. It's the standard of care for SD! There is no question there. Sometimes it depends on good cooperation from the billing people at your MD's office. That can make all the difference.

I once had a friend with a particular insurance who had her claims repeatedly denied. We wrote a letter together and faxed it to the medical director at her insurance company (cc'ing a lawyer!) one day and she had it approved and covered within minutes. Unfortunately, others with the same insurance and same MD were not so lucky and had their appointments cancelled. Meanwhile, they all had the same insurance. It's absurd.

I can send you the letter if you're interested.

There are also insurance specialists that can handle this through the Botox Advantage Reimbursement Hotline. They are available by phone 1-800-530-6680 and on-line www.BOTOX.com/reimbursement They will work w/ your MD's billing people and call your insurance company for you to get things sorted out.

It sometimes takes more than an initial appeal to get it covered but I'd keep at it if you want it covered. Go through all the steps. Insurance companies want you to back down after the first denials. And most people do. Don't!

I can't blame you for paying the meantime. I sure would.

Anyway, good luck with everything and please feel free to write me off the bulletin board.

also, just to let you know, United Healthcare is covering my botox injections. I don't know if this was under some pre-existing condition or not, but just wanted to let you know.
