I was reading a description of vocal cord paralysis and I have all the symptoms and apparently that condition is operable. My doctor aggrees with my self diagnosis of "Abbductor" SD but he has never examined my vocal cords! Prior to him, a very young ENT who didn't know what spasmodic Dysphonia was was the only Doctor who looked at them. My Doctor, who is at Mayo in Scottsdale, went by the sound of my voice. He never thought it necessary to explore further! Should I be looking into this? Should I be looking into surgery? Could he be wrong?

I'm not writing to comment on the real difference between vocal cord paralysis but want to dicuss your medical diagnosis or lack thereof. If you want to know the best way to know if you truly have SD, go to the National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association web site. Click onto Spasmodic Dysponia and then Diagnosis. Based on your past medical examinations, I trust you'll be in for a surprise on what really should be taking place before you entertain any form of treatment. The web site is http://www.dysphonia.org/

While you're on this web site, you might read other sections as well.

I actually have read the site before. I am unsure as to what should "surprise " me? I still think that this is a really easy thing to misdiagnose, in both directions. What exactly are you trying to say? I am confused.

Hi Celeste;

I really think you should explore further, before surgery. I think, with all surgery comes scar tissue, eventually. Can you ask your doctor to examine your vocal cords to get a correct diagnosis?; you should do this. I also have ABSD and I am looking for miracles, anything to cure my voice condition, but surgery is very risky, especially on the vocal cords, this is just my opion. If there were a good chance surgery would work for me, I would do it for sure, but for SD, whether AB, or AD, I would more than twice think it. Just get the correct diagnosis, for sure. That takes looking at your vocal cords and speech testing. Plus, I had to have neurological testing, MRI, EMG, and before that, speech pathologist, before that my first diagnosis from the first ENT. After the neurologist, I went to another ENT who was experienced in SD. All of them said the same thing, but I had to be sure.

Take care,

Kim/AB

Thanks Kim. I agree, I would like to be better tested.It seems that much diagnosis is done just by "sounds like". And all those "professionals" listened to me and agreed! I will have some testing done but what would I be risking? I already can't talk!LOL! Seriously, I do understand what you mean and thank you for your kind response.

Hi Celeste

That's good that "they" listened and you are going to have further testing, before considering surgery.

Do you have times where you can talk better than other times?

I do sometimes. Not very often, though.

There would be no risks in the testing, but there are risks with surgery. I think big risks, from what I have heard.

Our voice condition is hard to handle/deal with/accept. I'm just waiting, hoping for something, counting my blessings.

Take care,

Kim/Houston/ABSD

Absolutely but whats weird is I can't tell! Others say , you sound good today! So when I think I can't talk , I can ,and when I think I sound good, I sound awful! This is one of the singular most disturbing aspects of this condition to me! I will nit rest till I improve this somehow.And just fore the record"they" are NOT interested in testing me further. I am interested in testing me further and I hope I can convince them to test me! Cheers! and take care!
