I just had botox on rgt side of the vocal cord & on the left side the false vocal cord got 45 botox. I can not swallow liquids. Foods are no problems, at least right now . But I can't swallow liquids , and when I do , it feels like it's going into my lungs. I'm afraid of getting pneumonia and I have a dry cough which hurts my lungs. How do you drink liquids without choking or it going down the wrong pipe? And I have flim coming up .

This is my 2nd try of botox w/i 6 weeks. Last one helped alittle but I had no side effects at all. This time, I have lots of side effects, but I have actually heard a "good voice" the same day I had the botox done. It was wonderful. But now one day past, my voice is really high & Squeeky But... voice is not strained like before, so I know this treatment worked (but they had to put me asleep for this one because of doing the false vocal cords to. ) I'm just glad the Dr figured out what I needed for my SD problem. The choking & straining is at least gone. Thank goodnes..

Any help you can give about drinking I would appreciate. Thanks

Hi.

A couple of suggestions re: swallowing:
1) Put your chin to your chest while swallowing
2) Drink nectar-type fruit drinks

Hi Susan.
I agree with Laurie, plus read my reply to Dawn Smith on the subject "First Botox tomorrow," where I added some more points about very small sips. A straw also helps me.

If you can swallow food easily, just eat more moist foods, like applesauce, canned fruits with their juices, etc. Also, you can purchase a product called "Thick-It" to add to any liquid, which is what nursing homes use for elderly patients who choke easily.

The fact you are having these side effects means the Botox is working, but you received a higher dose than last time. The good news is that the GOOD effects will probably last longer.

Botox isn't a perfect solution, but the results are usually worth the trouble. Try to relax as much as possible during this trying period, take very small sips, slowly, as I told Dawn, and hopefully you can learn to adjust as needed.

Warm wishes, Marilee

Hi Susan,

When I had the choking reflex after a botox injection straws really helped. Make sure to take small sips, and when I used to get to the last sip, I would always forget and just gulp it, which is a no no. Just take it slow, this time will pass.

Good luck,

and the good results will come soon,

Paula

I had the same problem after SLAD-R surgery. I couldn't swallow liquids. Try drinking with a pinched straw. Let a little go to the roof of your mouth and than swallow. It worked for me. As time went on I could swallow more and more at a time but found there is a certain way to hold the liquid in the mouth before you swallow it. I can't tell you how that is but you will know it when it happens. If you have to take a pill, use some pudding or yogurt, covering the pill and than swallow. The thicker the liquid the easier to swallow. Take you time with all food and liquid. After awhile you will do everything more normally. I didn't have the side affects with the botox but the exact same symptoms follow surgery as most people have after botox except more extreme. Sound like your botox is working good.

Susan, did the swallowing and drinking improve yet? Most people say around 10 days, I think

Warm thoughts

I have had the same problem and have had to drink only milkshakes (or something similar) as opposed to any type of pop or juice for about the first 10 days after an injection. I also get the "squeeky" voice which eventually subsides. Hope this info helps!

I'm not sure I understand your concern completely but I usually have a problem drinking if I tilt my head back. I will strangle for sure. Best bet in my case is to use a straw and be ever aware of each sip and swallow. This phase doesn't usually last too long but it's like defensive driving, I calli t defensive swallowing.
Good Luck, Norma
