Hi Mary Ann:
If your doctor is as thorough as mine was at the first appointment, I would suspect that the first part of your appointment will be a consultation in which the doctor will explain SD, and present the various options available in terms of the type of injections he would do to treat your particular situation. Dosage and side effects should certainly be discussed. Then, I would imagine that the choice as to what is actually done will be yours to make. This whole procedure should only take around 20-30 minutes, and then your doctor will probably do the injection. The first doctor I went to was poor at explaining things, didn't seem to have a real clear sense of direction as to the course of treatment being attempted, and, unfortunately, was even worse at actually administering the botox. It was not a good experience to say the least. The doctor I am seeing now is the exact opposite in all of the areas I mentioned, including results achieved. I wish you the best of luck. Hope all goes well.Sincerely,
Keith

Hi Mary Ann,
I have been reading the BB for the pasted 3 yrs. and it helped my to understand SD also. This is my first reply and am happy to tell you about my time with the Dent Institute. I have gone there for 3yrs.for Botox shots, the doctor that had giving me my shots was very understanding and compassionate. He explained all the ups and downs as to what to expect from the shot before going for your throat.
After 3yrs. of Botox, It was no longer affective do to scar tissue from thyroid surgery, I now go to the Unv. of Rochester were I got my first shot 3 weeks ago. I must say it worked wonders on me in one day. I got up the next morning and started talking to my husband and the look on his face was priceless, he and I could not believe the change in my voice.
I hope I was able to help you as to the insite of the Dent Institute and their doctors please let me know who you will see while there.

Hello Carol, I will be seeing Dr Holmlund. May I ask you why you now go to the Unv Of Rochester? Can they do something there that Dent can't? I hope you continue to have good luck .
Thank You,

Hi Mary Ann, It sounds like you will have a consult with Dr. Holmlund and not get a Botox shot at this visit. Dr. Holmlund is a good Neruo., as far as I know he does not do Botox Shots for the vocal cord unless he has learned since I left there. Dr. Brian Same is the ENT that did my shots and explained all I needed to know about it.
I go to Rochester because Dr. Michael Haben does a visual procedure where he can see the needle go into the vocal cord for a direct distribution of the Botox. Dent does not do this yet. I spoke with Dr. Same this morning, he told me they are looking into learning this procedure, it would be good for me so I won`t have to travel to Rochester. Dr. Haben fells after the next Botox shot I may not go back to see him for 5-6 months.
Good luck with your visit let us know how it went.Carol Buffalo,NY AD/Sd 5yrs.

Mary Ann, Yes that is Dr. Holmlund and I have been going to him for at lease 3 yrs.. What is is, is that Dr. Same comes from his offices to Dent to give the Botox shots for the vocal cords and Dr. Holmlund assit Dr. Same with the audio machine. When you go there to see Dr. Holmlund he makes you fell very comfortable and explains all,as does Dr. Same. You will love his accent, Dr. Holmlund`s, I know I did. Good luck!!!! Hi Mary Ann,
I guess you have your botox yesterday. I didn't see this until today. I've been two different places for botox and they each did it differently. The first was at UC Davis in Sacramento and it was a shot in the nose, a camera down the nose and two shots in the neck (hitting the vocal cords) while watching on a monitor.
The second shot was at UCLA Medical Center with Dr. Gerald Berke. It was so simple. I glad I went to UC Davis first because I don't think I could have handled it if I knew how easy it could be. Dr. Berke simply gives the two tiny injections as he feels for the vocal cords. It took a few seconds. Let me know how your botox works. I pray it be perfect for you.
Blessings,

Thanks everone for the reply. I saw the Neuro, and he was quite startled at the sound of my voice. He called in a speech therapist to listen to me and they both determined besides the Mixed SD that I could have muscle tension dysphonia as well. Is this possible? He just said it is the worst he has heard.I have to go see a ent/ voice disoder expert . They told me with my difficulty swallowing They will not attempt Botox right now . But I have a question for some of you . Do any of you have tremors or any other types of dystonia's , as a result of SD? Or trouble swallowing or problems talking with your tongue to the point that you slurr on certain words? Thanks Again.Mary Ann NY Mixed SD
