Botox Injections

Hi Everyone,

My Doctor has told me twice that if I need to have my Botox early, because of a special gathering, or event, I could just make an appointment. If I know that my shot will be wearing off around the time of a family gathering, or new job, I would be able to fix it. I see Dr. Richardson at the Bastian Voice Institute, and I hear he is good, and I think so too. Has anyone ever done this? How did it go? Did it work?

Hi Paula. First I'd like to say how nice of Dr. Richardson to tell you that! I've never been told that in all the years I've been getting botox and I know many others have problems getting in earlier than when the doctor schedules his appointments. Seems like Dr. Richardson is a very compassionate doctor. I'm just wondering how he offers this since once a vial of botox is opened, it only last about 4 hours (I think that's correct), which would mean the remaining botox would either have to be used or thrown out.

Since everyone is different, and their reactions to botox is different, it all depends on when the special occasion is and how you respond to botox. When I've decided on getting botox for a special occasion, I'd try to get it about a month prior to the occasion. By then, usually the breathiness that I have after botox, is a lot better, though sometimes it's still hard to talk over loud noises.

In my opinion, you have to see how you react to botox first, how long it lasts and how breathy you get, and then you'll probably be the best judge of when it would be best.

Any other opinions, SD'ers?

Best of luck!!!

Hi Paula
In the ten years I was recieving Botox shots I was doing quite a bit of theater. I would schedule the injections around productions. It worked well. I would usually get the shot at least a month before opening and would be careful not to strain my voice during rehearsals.

Hi Paula. I'm pretty much in agreement with Carol & Ida. My Doctors, and I've had many, have always been accomodating. They tell me not to wait until I can barely talk to get an injection. So I get one about every three months. For special occasions, I too plan ahead, and a month is about right for me to have a strong normal voice following Botox. But it took years to get the dosage right. As I understand it, Botox costs about $1,000 for a 100 unit bottle. I use less than 2% and if there are no other patients to share it, the other 98% must be destroyed within a few hours. That can get very expensive. Thankfully the VA pays for everything in my particular situation. I get injected left/right with a total of 1.5 units using a 30 gauge needle. And I can talk quite well almost all the time. Tommy
