Swallowing problems

I have ADSD (18 yrs.). I am curious if anyone has swallowing problems. Recently I have begun choking for no reason (on my on saliva). Also, when drinking any liquids I will have a pause in my swallowing reflex (lasting as much as 5 seconds) where I simply cannot swallow. It is as if my brain is not sending out the correct signals and I have to wait for it to "kick in" again. Just wondering if this is SD related or something else.

Thanks.

Hi,

I only have swallowing problems for about a week after Botox kicks in. I understand it's a pretty common side effect. I have never heard of long-term swallowing issues associated with SD.

Donna, I started having SD symptoms in 1999, when I was 24. It has been severe for about a year and a half. About 3 years ago, I noticed that I would have these, what I call like a swallowing episode. I felt like I had to swallow over and over and I couldn't stop swallowing my own salavia. I would have to try to fall asleep, in order for it to stop. I thought it was some sort of anxiety thing, but with the vocals opening too often, since I have AB/SD, or mixed, maybe the SD had something to do with it. I get it rarely now, it was worse then. I sometimes have a hard time swallowing and sometimes when I swallow I feel like a knot in my throat, like a spasm, when I swallow, like it doesn't go down easy. It is hard to explain. Sometimes I choke on my own salavia as well. That is my experience. Take care, Mandy- 29-Santa Clarita, CALIF

Hi Donna,
I've had AD/SD for 30+ years. The only time I have difficulty swallowing is about a week after receiving my Botox inj.It usually goes away in about 2 weeks. My food feels as if it sticks half way down & I have to swallow 3 times to get it all the way down. I get strangled very easily on liquids also. I am not familiar with AB/SD.

Best wishes,
linda

Thank you each for your replies. I do have swallowing problems after botox, but this is different and not related to the botox injections. In the back of my mind I am thinking this may be related to some other form of dysphonia, but I am not sure. You know, with SD you just go day to day, so I will just wait and see how things go. Thank you so much.
Donna
