MarciaInterestingly, I just started taking neurontin in order to relieve general body ache associated with side effects of another drug I take. It will be difficult for me to note whether neurontin helps my AD SD since I'm getting Botox injections and theu are successful. Are you taking neurontin specifically to see whether it helps the SD?
Yes. My neurologist prescribed it for the SD. It's a fairly common drug used by neurologists for a variety of neurological problems, but he wasn't sure how much it would help. I'm still building up my dosage, but I believe it is decreasing the spasming, both in my vocal cords and neck. It's also a pretty harmless drug, so you don't get into issues of drowsiness, addiction, etc.The other drug which I think is very effective is klonapin (clonazapin) (sp?), but it's clearly addictive, so I've only experimented in very small doses and tend to be wary of those kinds of drugs. However, according to a personal friend who's a neurologist, many people take the drug all their lives and get help from it.
Obviously, for those with AD SD who are having good results with botox, that's a better solution than drugs. But since botox hasn't helped my AB variety so far, I'm looking at all possible avenues for help.

Marcia,After briefly conversing with you on this subject while we were at lunch earlier this month, I'm curious about it also. As I mentioned to you, a couple of glasses of wine eased my vocal spasms (prior to surgery) enough to talk on the phone for a couple hours a day...just in order to maintain some contact with the world over the four non-diagnosed "severe-spasm-years." Diane Rehm also mentioned wine and champagne as something that helped her case. We both have AD-SD though, as opposed to AB.
Have you researched that pharmaceutic online? Besides AB-SD effects, it would be interesting to know what other "conditions" it might affect.
This is about the first "drug" question (and semi-testimonial) I've seen on the BB so it's interesting. Keep us posted.
