First timer - Flu symptoms after first botox

Hi everyone. I'm MaryJ. I was recently diagnosed with AD SD in December 2003. I had my first botox injection in April. The day after the injection I developed what seemed like a cold and then flu-like symptoms for approximately two weeks. I could not speak above a whisper for at least 3 weeks. I had to take a pad and pen everywhere to communicate. I don't think I ever got my "good voice" and am quite reluctant to go through this again. Has anyone else had an experience like this?

Hi MaryJ. Sorry to hear about your symptoms. I recently had a botox injection and I also had flu-like symptoms but they lasted a short time. I've had those symptoms before, but only for about a day. Everyone is different though.

From my experience with botox, and I've had many injections, each injection is different and if you were that breathy, the best thing to do is ask the doctor to give you a smaller dose. At the beginning, the doctor doesn't really know how much botox to give you, so it's kind of an experiment. Then hopefully he'll get the right dose, although for myself it's not only been adjusting the dose, it's also injecting the botox in the right spot.

I don't know how bad your voice normally is, but in my own personal experience, I'd say it's worth trying again. I think most who have had botox will agree.

Best of luck to you with whatever you decide.

Carol

Hi Mary, and welcome to the NSDA BB - thanks for joining us.

What you describe has been reported as a possible consequence of a Botox shot - but doesn't seem to happen every time, or to every person.

When you say flu-like symptoms, do you mean the full 'aching bones, headache etc', or something less, like a sore, raw throat? I've had Botox shots more than 40 times now, and I certainly experience the raw throat at times - usually in the first week after the shot. It confirms to me that the shot has taken.

It sounds like you may have been given a fairly high dose if you were 'aphonic' (no voice) afterwards. It takes a while for you and your doctors to arrive at a treatment regime that suits you, and you may need a lower dose next time. My advice would be to stay with it - subsequent shots usually last longer, and you should get better relief with some adjustment. Ask your doctors questions - what dose are you getting, are you getting the shot unilaterally or bilaterally, how many sites are they injecting per vocal cord? It helps if you are an active participant in your treatment.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the reply David.

By flu-like symptoms I mean a tremendous amount of congestion in my head and ears. I was extremely tired and had a poor appetite.

My doctor injected the left vocal cord with 2 units of botox. I got a second opinion from a speech pathologist who agrees that the dose was probably too high for me. I was not aware that it was a trial and error method. Since the treatment was approximately $1400.00 US and I got stuck with $400.00 not covered by insurance, I'm not too happy with the experimentation involved.
