Re: Speech Amplified Telephone
Does anyone know if this phone can work anywhere?I recently at Surgery with Dr Burke for AB/SD and I am on the phone at work quite often. I work at a College and had asked for an amplifier for my phone before I had surgery and they said they could not do just my phone, they would have to change everyone's. Also, on another matter, can the noni juice be purchased at a GNC or is it only through a mail order? I am wondering if Noni Juice could help speed up the recovery process after surgery. I would appreciate any information anyone could offer.
Thanks
Colleen
Re: Speech Amplified Telephone
Colleen, go to the website and check out the different options. There are handsets only to buy that you can attach to your telephone. You would have to be certain that the handset would fit into your cradle, but you could buy the handset only, plug it into your telephone, and it would work fine. The handset would only amplify your outgoing voice. I have had an ampliphied phone for several years. However, I don't think it works quite as well as it use to, but it has been a lifesaver for me especially since my surgery with Dr. Berke. I was interested in purchasing a new phone or handset. I checked out the website last night. E-Mail me directly if I can be of further help.
Re: Speech Amplified Telephone (and noni)
Hi Lylia and Colleen,On the phone, how different would Joan's Hi-tech one (or the one you have used, Lylia) be from the *free* ones you can get through the state/federal programs (beginning with your own local phone company...see my message to Katrina a few days ago). When I attended the massive "Technology and Persons with Disabilities Convention" in Los Angeles last March, I tried out some amplified phones and there seems to be alot of variety in the *free* category. When I spoke to Joan the day before she left for LA for her surgery, she had not yet tried out her new phone...otherwise, I would ask her. But, she's in surgery so her assessment may have to wait a bit. Colleen...do a web search on "Morinda" or "Tahitian Noni Juice." The info will come flooding in at that point. It is marketed by an MLM organization and was not available at GNC or retail-wise the last I checked. That's normally the way all MLM-distributor companies work. Tons of info on the Internet though. I'm ordering it also. You could also write to Doug, who put the original message on the BB (or, if you write to me, I don't think he would mind if I gave you the distributor license number and phone number that he gave me - you could order it through that). Otherwise...you could also look in your local Yellow Pages under Health Food (or something like that). I've found distributors of various products (no Noni, unfortunately) under that category in my area; and, if you find one near where you live, you could just go pick it up rather than having it shipped. Good luck. --Lynne
Re: Speech Amplified Telephone (and noni)
Hello Lynn, I have thought of you often since our chat at Peggy's. Hope all is well with you. I did not know that there were "free" telephones for people with voice disorders. How do I check this out? Whom should I call? Either post a reply or send me a personal E-mail. This would be something that I would like to check out. The amplified telephone is something that no one with SD should be without. That is the amplified phone that amplifies the "outgoing" voice not the type that amplifies for "the hard of hearing". Would be nice not to have to pay for the phone. I did buy the one I have now. As I remember it cost around $100.00. Tomorrow will be 12 weeks since my surgery. Things are going well for me.
Re: Speech Amplified Telephone (and noni)
Hi Lylia,Yes! Great to hear from you again since you were at Peggy's in the early stages of recovery from Berke-surgery and the four of us were chit-chatting away!!! Ha-ha :)) Good to know you are recovering well. Here is the clip I wrote to Katrina Lantz about the free amplifier phones 2 or 3 days ago under the thread "ABductor SD":
------------
~~~ Oops...tried 3 times. Cut-and-paste failed. How weird. That's never happened to me. Must be missing something. Help, David. Help, Lloyd! ~~~~
------------
Anyway, read to the bottom of that BB thread for instructions. By Federal Law, all US phone companies have to provide special phone equipment to qualified disabled people. They provide free equipment to amplify the voice if your doc qualifies you. TDD. Special Equipment is NOT just for deaf-people!! It's for people who have no volume in speaking also. I tried out several of the free devices at both the "Technology and Persons with Disabilities" Convention in LA in March and also the ASHA Convention (American Speech and Hearing Association) last November in San Francisco. My question to you (and to Joan, when she arrives home) is...how do the *free* amplifying phones compare with the ones people pay for? It's possible that the Hi-tech (brand) phone Joan bought is a better quality but...who knows until we try and compare, right? If they're the same, no reason for folks to spring for the $100 when they have the right to get a free one. It would be good if people could try the free ones first before they lay out extra money for one which might be more "Hi-tech" (as the company name implies) but maybe no better. :) I'll try to paste the message to Katrina into your personal e-mail. won't Joan be pleased to know we are waiting for her assessment!! Hey Joan, get that whisper going on your new phone so we can figure this whole thing out. --Lynne
Re: Speech Amplified Telephone (and noni)
Lynne and Lylia,
Thanks so much for your information about the phones and Noni,
I got an e-mail back from our Telephone Manager at work and she said that
our college has a digital PBX and there is not an Iwatsu product out there to amplifie my phone. So does that mean it is impossible for me to have an amplifier on my phone. Any thoughts, Thanks again,
Colleen
Re: Speech Amplified Telephone (and noni)
Colleen,I have a few ideas but I think it's best we chit-chat re these on private e-mail. Write me on "L7martinez@aol.com" or I will try to write you after I dig out from under some other things I'm buried under in the next couple of days. When we figure this out (because I believe your issue of working with your company's phone system...but meeting your own needs as well) is extremely important to many of us, we should both re-post to this BB. Write me. --Lynne
Re: Speech Amplified Telephone (and noni)
Hi Lynne, Colleen and others, I just called the number in the Us West phone book here in Tucson for disability info. I couldn't find anything about TTD so I called the TTY number. Arizona does not have any amplified phones just the relay type. I was given the names of three companies that deal with the amplified phones that I could purchase. The woman told me that "we hope to have those available in 6-8 months". I have heard for years that Califonia does more for the disabled and I guess it is true! One of these phone companies is in the Phoenix area so guess I will call them first.The other two have web sites.
I'll keep you posted.
Katrina
Re: Speech Amplified Telephone
Lylia and Lynn,
Thanks to both of you for your information about the phone I needed at work, I gave the College that I work at the website and they have found a phone with an amplifier that will work with their system here. They actually thanked me for giving them the website, because they said it would be very useful for other things as well. The College has a fund that it will be paid for with. Thanks again!
Re: Speech Amplified Telephone
Great news Colleen,As I said to your private e-mail, it is definitely one of those things where you (we) have to take the "bull by the horns" and do our own research and present it to the authorities (or bureaucracy...or whatever we should call them). If we wait for them to do it for us, it will take forever. Fortunately, there is so much info out on this BB that it's faster to get educated on these devices or sources or processes than it used to be so glad to be of help in your quest! Congratulations! Now you've helped to educate those folks in your college-community in Omaha who you have to work with everyday. Good for you! Did you get a chance to pick up the info on the SpectrumVP Speech Enhancer that I sent you? That could help also in a different way. Was it that website or another one? I'm very curious. --Lynne
Re: Speech Amplified Telephone
