Hi Everyone, For years, at times, my words would just "get stuck" in my throat. Otherwise, my speech was fine and I didn't pay too much attention to it, however, I did see a doctor at one point and he said "oh honey, you are probably just nervous". I know most of you can relate to that statement. Well, anyhow, about 10 years later I noticed a lump in my neck and had it checked out. Come to find out I had a nodule on my thyroid. Funny, but for those past 10 years I had been busy having babies and had actually stopped thinking about my words sticking in my throat. I had the nodule aspirated and got on with my life. Twenty years later I developed SD (after being told I was nervous, getting old, all of the crazy things we have all been told). I mentioned the nodule to my ENT, thinking that surely there must be a connection, but he didn't seem to think so. Ever so often the thought arises that perhaps I DO have another nodule and IT IS pressing against my vocal cords, and that is WHY I have such a difficult time talking, maybe it's NOT SD afterall, etc., etc., etc., drives me crazy!! But wouldn't the ENT be able to see a thyroid nodule pressing on my vocal cords? Has anyone else had nodules on their thyroids? Thanks for any input. Doris St. Clair AD/SD VA |

Hi Doris, Why don't you ask your ENT for a scope check-up to see if there are any more nodules growing either on your vocal folds or elsewhere. The equipment that they use now, 20 or 30 years on from your last check up are much more sophisticated and able to show any physical irregularites in the vocal tract. Lloyd Pearson(BC)Canada AD/SD |

Thanks Lloyd, actually my ENT has done a scope. He did that in the beginning (5 years ago) but I never knew that my thyroid was checked at the same time. I guess because when the nodule was found many years ago, a radioactive iodine was injected before the sonagram was done. Isn't that the way they still check for nodules on thyroids? But if the ENT can tell, then I don't want to go to the trouble and expense of having the sonagram done. Thanks again Lloyd. Doris St. Clair AD/SD VA |
