Hello everyone.

I was diagnosed with AB/SD last thursday, after seeing 5

specialists. For the last few years it was thought my vocal

problems were due to my having Essential Tremors, for which the

treatment is the same, botox injections. I'm so relieved that

I'm finally going to get treatment for it. I'm seeing the head

of the Voice Disorders Clinic at Mt. Siani Hospital in NYC. He

tells me I will be getting injections once a month until they

figure out what dose works for me. He has also warned me that

my laryngeal anatomy is larger then most people and that he might

not be able to reach the AB muscles with the needle due to it

being short in length. I'm excited as well as nervous. Not sure

what to expect. Hopefully reading the postings here will help.

I'm a retired paramedic, so I have medical knowledge, but as the

old saying goes for doctors, in that they make the worse patients,

the same holds true for paramedics! Sometimes it's better not to

know anything.

Dawn

Hi Dawn,

Welcome to the NSDA SD bulletin Board. You came to the right place (as you already know, being a medical practitioner).

I'm sure you'll enjoy participating on this BB, based on what you have told us. It's always good to have medical people aboard, as patients. We all learn from folks who have been in the trenches, like you.

Also, I see another post from you re being interested in the Washington, DC symposium on March 8th. Hope to see you there.

Interesting information you offered, re your laryngeal anatomy because *size* does often bear on our Botox treatments or any treatment for SD'ers (ie: SLAD surgery). I'm sure this comment will cause snickers...and that's OK...but the docs do discuss the differences in laryngeal anatomy at symposiums as a reason why treatments may work better for some than others. Just one of the unique features of us vocal patients. Good you know that in advance.

As long as you have an experienced doc (with strong background in injecting the PCA muscle and with several AB patients), you should be able to work with that doc on your plan to determine proper doseage. Sounds like you do, based on where you are getting treated. Just keep track of your shot reaction, either on tape or on a chart. Best of luck, Dawn. Keep us posted.
