I have no insurance and so far, I've only had botox injections done once. I'm scheduled to get my next ones in December and I'm curious as to how much the follow-ups cost. My doctor's office said it will cost me $400 for the visit/shots. Is that too much or just right? |

The cost can vary depending on how many other people are getting theirs done the same day. One vial of Botox costs approximately $600. If two people are getting their injections that day, they would split the cost of the vial, even though together they're only using a fraction of it. The rest is thrown out because it expires quickly. Your best bet is to get with your ENT to schedule yours when the most people are getting theirs done, too. I don't know exactly how much mine cost (my ins gets the bill...), but I believe my Dr. only charges for the units used and takes a loss for the discarded amount. On another note, how long after you received your first injections did your voice sound "breathy?" I just got my first ones 11 days ago and I still sound that way. I'm very curious to hear about everyone else's results... |

Hi Samantha, Comparatively speaking, I think that sounds like a very reasonable price for botox injections. I've seen much higher prices. Laurie (AD/SD, NYC) |

My neurologist charged about $650 for the botox injection - no matter how much (number of units) he gave, or whether it was unilateral or bilateral, or how many people he administered it to on a given day. Glynda (AD/SD - Birmingham, AL SLAD-R on 6-12-02) |

Hi Samantha, I think that is an excellent going rate for a Botox injection. As others have already mentioned it varies from state to state and the doctor. Glynda Haley and I are both from the Birmingham area and we saw the same Neuorlogist for a while and the cost there was around $650.00 per injection. However, I went to Vanderbilt Voice Center in Nashville, TN and the cost there was around $800 to $1,000 per injection. And it's true the doctor's purchase a vail of Botox that has to be used in the same day. This is why you will find doctor's in different areas that only do the shots once a month on a particular day and some do them one a week. There is a Patient Assistance Program at Allergan's Botox website: www.botox.com Here is an extract: Allergan sponsors a patient assistance program for uninsured patients and patients with no coverage for The BOTOX®. Patients must meet a set of eligibility criteria before being considered for the program and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Patients who wish to be considered for evaluation should call the The BOTOX® Reimbursement Hotline at 800-530-6680. And I think there are others too, but not sure. Also in answer to the length of breathness question: It also varies depending on the individual, case, ie Mid, Moderate, Severe SD as well as the experience of the doctor who injects and how. I usually went any where from 6 weeks to 2 months. It also depends on the units given and if you are injected bilaterally or unilaterally (one side or both). Usually if you stay breathy a while it sometimes means the doctor hit the correct muscle/nerve. I don't know if this will help, but I hope it will. Good Luck and Regards, Jan Joiner - ADSD/Alabama - SLAD Surgery 6/01 |

$400.00 sounds like a deal to me. I have been paying around $750.00, however, my doctor has relocated and I am in the process of finding another doctor with experience. The only one that I know of, within a reasonable distance from me with experience charges around $1,700.00!! I just recently changed insurance carriers and now have a very high deductable. I am considering asking for a cut for cash. Has anyone tried that approach? Doris St. Clair AD/SD Virginia |

I'm almost reluctant to print this because I'm afraid people will hate me, but my myobloc shot runs me $20.00. I guess this is because my neurogist can reuse the myobloc, and I have an in-network insurance carrier. I hope this doesn't cause too much jealousy!!! (Plus--I only have a 15 minute drive to get my shots!!!) On the plus side--I realize how fortunate I am...

In 10 years, my price range was $400 to $600 for a unit dosage of 1.5 to 2.5 units, total. Sometimes this dosage was split between two sides, sometimes it as all in one side. The amount stayed pretty much the same. John |

My ENT used to charge $75.00 Canadian per injection (regardless of the whether he did unilateral or bilateral), but when I was flying to New York to have Dr. Blitzer do the injections he charged $1000.00 US. What a racket!

I know most of this thread has concerned people making individual comparisons regarding the cost of Botox injections for SD, and the question of affordability hasn't been widely discussed - so I thought I would add to this that if anyone is having problems with insurance coverage, or isn't in a position to afford the shots, then this link might be useful: http://www.dysphonia.org/nsda/treatment/reimburse.asp This gives contact information about Insurance Reimbursement and also a Patient Assistance Program offered by Allergan (the manufacturers of Botox). Hi everyone, I would be interesting in hearing from others from Virginia about the costs of their Botox. It looks like I am being charged a lot compared to those in other locations. Also, am wondering if the doctors in North Carolina are more reasonable. Does anyone know? Thanks!! Doris St. Clair AD/SD Virginia |

Hi Doris. I live in Portsmouth, VA & my injections are around $1000 per shot. I go to Eastern Va Medical School for the shot. The doctor is VERY good. There is one charge for $750 and another for the EMG for around $220. I don't know anything about NC. |

Hi Wendy, thank you so much for your reply. Eastern Va. Medical is where I normally go but my doctor recently relocated to Alaska. He too was very good but I didn't have good results with his replacement. He is very nice but I would rather try someone else. Do you mind telling me your doctor's name? That would be great!! There is one in Richmond that is very good but he charges around $1700.00. I know that Dr. Kaufman at Wake Forest is very good so if anyone out there knows anything about him please let me know. His rates, etc. Thanks again.

I had Dr. Plant also & was very upset to see him go to Alaska. I had his replacement (a cute guy with dark hair ??). I don't remember his name. I had great results with him as well. In fact, my injection was much better & no pain at all! I didn't think it was going to work but it did wonderfully. Where do you live? |

Hi Wendy, I am glad that you had good results with the new doctor. I wish I had. He was very nice and patient. I am reluctant to go back to him because he had such a hard time with me. But I am happy to know that the injection worked for you. I live in the western part of the state near Lexington and Roanoke. How long have you had SD and do you have AD or AB? Thank you again for your info. Doris St. Clair AD/SD |
