This month we will discuss how voice disorders can impact our relationships. When anyone develops a voice disorder that impairs their ability to effectively communicate, they may experience depression and find themselves socially isolated as a result of their vocal limitations. They may also notice an impact on their personal relationships, including relationships with spouses, children, parents and friends. At the onset of a disorder that impacts your ability to communicate, like SD, one must navigate and refine their role with family, friends, coworkers, members of their community and their medical team. They must reconstruct many of their social behaviors and navigate to a “new normal.”

In this meeting we will discuss Dysphonia International’s article “Understanding How a Voice Disorder Can Impact Your Relationships“. The article discusses the stages of adjustment and how friends and family can help us navigate these. If you would like to prepare for our discussion, please see THIS LINK.
